A randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial in 25 people with COPD found no statistically significant improvement in mucus clearance after a single 40 mg dose of dry sodium chloride.
Reported findings
No statistically significant difference in mucociliary clearance was found at one hour (p = 0.97) or two hours (p = 0.55). The dose was tolerated without acute adverse effects in this sample.
Limitations
- COVID-19 stopped recruitment before the planned 35 participants. The underpowered trial cannot establish that an effect is absent.
- A single-dose dry powder inhaler is not equivalent to repeated salt-room sessions or HaloTherapyPRO equipment.
